Company Garden (Chandrashekhar Azad Park) – A Historic Haven in Prayagraj

Company Garden (Chandrashekhar Azad Park) – A Historic Haven in Prayagraj

Nestled in the heart of Prayagraj, Company Garden, officially known as Chandrashekhar Azad Park, is not just a scenic retreat but a place of historical significance and personal nostalgia for me. This park, named after the great freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad, is where he made his last stand against British forces in 1931, choosing to embrace martyrdom rather than surrender.

A Park Steeped in History

Originally built by the British as Alfred Park, this sprawling garden has witnessed India’s fight for independence. The grand Chandrashekhar Azad Memorial stands here as a tribute to the fearless revolutionary who spent his last moments fighting for his motherland. The park also houses the Public Library, a grand colonial-era building, and the Madan Mohan Malviya Stadium, adding to its historical charm.

My Special Connection with Company Garden

Beyond its history, this park holds a special place in my heart. Back in 2018, I used to visit Company Garden every morning with my cousin (didi). Those peaceful hours spent walking among the tall, shady trees, fresh morning air, and beautifully landscaped gardens remain some of my fondest memories.

I still remember the early morning mist, the sound of birds chirping, and the sight of elderly groups practicing yoga while children played freely. It was my escape from the city’s hustle, a place where I could breathe, reflect, and feel connected to nature.

What to See at Company Garden

🌳 Chandrashekhar Azad Memorial – A statue marking the spot where Azad took his last breath.
📚 Allahabad Public Library – The largest library in Uttar Pradesh, with a grand colonial structure.
🏛 Victoria Memorial – A historic monument from the British era.
🌸 Lush Gardens & Walkways – Perfect for morning walks, jogging, and relaxation.
Madan Mohan Malviya Stadium – A sports hub for local athletes.

Why Visit Company Garden?

  • To relive history and honor Chandrashekhar Azad’s sacrifice.
  • To enjoy peaceful morning walks in a lush, green environment.
  • To explore colonial-era architecture and historic monuments.
  • To unwind, exercise, or simply soak in nature’s beauty.

Best Time to Visit

Early mornings and evenings are the best times to enjoy the park’s serenity and fresh air. Winters (October–March) are especially pleasant, making it a perfect season for outdoor strolls.

Final Thoughts

For me, Company Garden is not just a park—it’s a place filled with history, memories, and peaceful moments. Whether you visit to pay tribute to Azad, explore history, or simply take a walk among nature, this place will leave you with something special.
